đźš© The problem: Inflammation, Feeling Ungrounded
🧑‍🔧 How I fixed it: Go barefoot on the ground
During COVID, I spent countless days working 10-12 hours in front of a computer. Unsurprisingly, I felt terrible—drained, tense, and out of balance. I’d heard about grounding before but never gave it much thought.
One night, after an especially long and stressful day, I took a walk near the beach. On a whim, I kicked off my shoes and stepped onto the cold sand. Within minutes, a tingling sensation traveled up my legs, and I could feel my stress melting away. I rarely get headaches, but that night I had one—and to my surprise, it vanished within minutes. I realised there was something to this. Since then, grounding has become a regular practice for me. Just a few minutes walking barefoot on grass, sand, or any natural surface makes a noticeable difference. My favourite method? Sea swimming—the longer, the better! The cold exposure is a nice bonus. Living in Iceland gives it an extra kick.
Now, I know this might sound too woo-woo for some, but there’s real science behind it. Research suggests that direct contact with the Earth helps regulate the body’s electrical state, reduce inflammation, and even improve sleep. The Earth’s surface carries a negative charge, while our modern lifestyles—synthetic shoes, concrete, and constant exposure to electronics—build up positive ions in our bodies. Grounding helps discharge this excess static and restore balance.
The benefits? Reduced inflammation and pain, lower stress, improved sleep, better circulation, and a boosted immune system. This is one of my go to methods to make me feel better.
Give it a try. Worst case? You get some fresh air and time in nature. Best case? You find a simple, powerful way to recharge your body and mind.
